What are the things couples should absolutely include in their wedding checklists? I will be sharing more of the things that I found to be more important in my years as a wedding photographer in Greece. Read on!
Announce your wedding date in advance
Wedding photographer in Greece tip number one? Nothing is politer and more thoughtful than letting your guests know when and where your destination wedding will take place – as early as possible! Traveling to Greece is very convenient given the fact that there are international flights from and to all over the world, but giving your guests enough time to plan their trip is very important. When being a wedding photographer in Greece having lots of room in the transportation department is very important. Through the years I found out that it’s very easy to be on time in Greece if you have to travel a lot. There are connecting flights to almost all the famous islands daily, so getting in Greece will not be an issue. Always think of your guests first when planning a destination wedding. In case you’re hosting your wedding in the summer, guests might want to prolong their holiday in Greece and spend some time on the Greek islands. Exploring the micro-culture of the Greek islands and the overall feeling of the country will give your guests something they’ll remember forever! As a wedding photographer in Greece, I’ve also realized that If you’re not covering the costs of your wedding guests, giving them enough time to make their reservations is crucial for a stress-free experience! Don’t forget that knowing as early as possible who’s coming to your wedding will let you plan more efficiently for your wedding weekend and make all the necessary arrangements to make this memorable for you and all your guests!
Selecting the right time of the year
Shall we move to a wedding photographer in Greece tip number two? The good thing about destination weddings in Greece is that the weather is pretty much spotless from April to November and after that, it never gets too cold. Greece is a destination world-famous for the infinite amounts of sunshine and mild weather conditions – pretty much a dream for a wedding experience.
However, in my experience as a wedding photographer in Greece, May and June are the perfect months to host a wedding as the weather is fairly mild and the rates for the wedding venues and accommodation lots are friendlier, giving you many options and a chance to book your dream venue easier. Late September to early November is also a lovely season to host an autumn wedding, making it the ideal opportunity for a belated holiday for you and your guests. It’s a fact that when brisk autumn hits the world, Greece enjoys the calmness and breezy warm temperatures until late November. My years in the wedding business show me that it all depends on your preferences and wedding budget.
In some places, July and August are the ideal months to host a cosmopolitan affair and a great after-party! The more exclusive high-end islands shine in the midsummer with glamour making them irresistible for a grand destination wedding in Greece. If you’re hosting a wedding on a yacht, I can’t think of a more perfect place than Mykonos on a balmy July’s night!
Decide on the vibe of your wedding
Wedding photographer in Greece tip number three – one of my personal favorites! Defining your wedding vision and focusing on the style is your playground. This is where Pinterest becomes your best friend! Deciding on the aesthetics of your wedding day, the color palette you’re following and all the glossy bits like flowers and wedding dress can dictate the island you’re choosing to host your wedding. Being a wedding photographer in Greece has shown me that no island is the same, the same way each couple is different from the others.
If you want an elegant and timeless wedding day, locations like Mykonos or Corfu will be perfect for you. Whereas if you’re opting for an elevated beach or bohemian wedding, islands like Santorini, Crete, or Ios might make your heart flutter. But let me share more!
Mykonos – as I’m sure you already know – is the most famous cosmopolitan island of Greece, a whitewashed paradise in the heart of the Cyclades, a fascinating world where glamour meets simplicity. Being very well preserved and designed, makes it ideal for an elegant destination wedding in Greece, with many venues and private villas to choose from. That makes the island a solid choice for couples wanting a high-end and refined wedding day!
Corfu is one of the most beautiful and romantic islands of the Ionian island group. From lush green hills to noble mansions and from idyllic Corfu beaches, to interesting museums, this island has everything it takes to please any type of couple. My personal favorite wedding venue on the island? Achilleion Palace, the former retreat of princess Sissi of Austria and Mon Repos palace, where Phillip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II was born. Especially for the brides dreaming of feeling like a modern day princess, booking Achillion Palace for your wedding day will give a truly unforgettable charm to your destination wedding in Greece.
It’s a fact that no one can deny the charm of Santorini for a wedding day. Whether you are looking for a traditional church scenery with breathtaking views of the volcano and the blue sea, a wedding by the beach with pure summer fun, or getting married in a romantic winery, Santorini is your location! I’ve written before about weddings in Santorini and why they’re great. As a wedding photographer in Greece, no amount of times on the island is enough to capture all the beauty but luckily I know all the secret corners and loveliest venues! Popular for bohemian chic weddings or timeless and charming events, Santorini has something for every bride!
Crete is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest one in the Mediterranean Sea. Couples who choose the island for their destination wedding can admire the remnants of brilliant civilizations, explore glorious beaches, impressive mountainscapes, valleys, and steep gorges, and become part of the island’s rich gastronomic culture. Crete is, after all, a small universe teeming with beauties and treasures that you will probably need a lifetime to uncover! It’s ideal for couples wanting a farm to table approach for their wedding day, a true Mediterranean affair rich in flavor and sun. My favorite spot on the island for a wedding? Agreco Farms for that sophisticated, natural, and organic wedding style!
Ios is a Cycladic island sitting in the heart of the Aegean Sea, my experience as a wedding photographer in Greece showing me it’s perfect for a bright destination wedding. It may be popular among the youth as one of the top party Greek islands, thanks to the crazy Ios nightlife, but the truth is that Ios is much more than that! Boasting the typical seductive Cycladic landscape – the one we keep on pinning over and over again on Pinterest – Ios Greece has tiny whitewashed houses, narrow cobblestone alleys, picturesque clifftop villages, and, of course, mesmerizing beaches. During the day, Ios island is the absolute Cycladic paradise for a wedding day. You and your guests will escape the summer heat at the golden beaches, where you will take a dip in the crystal clear Aegean waters or maybe even host a pre-wedding party. When the sun goes down, the bars and restaurants of Ios Chora come alive making the island the it-location for a wedding day centered around a great party!
In general, in my experience having a solid idea of your wedding style will give you and your planner helpful insight on what location to choose! Make sure it reflects you and your partner completely! All the wedding planners in the country share the same love for the landscape and culture, you’re in safe – not to mention stylish- hands!
You DO need a wedding planner
Time for wedding photographer in Greece tip number four! Although it’s possible to host a wedding in your hometown without expert help, I believe that for a destination wedding you will most certainly need a wedding planner to help you. She or He will guide you through the legal procedures and paperwork you’ll need for your wedding in Greece, as well as help you with wedding vendors and the styling of your celebration. Planning a wedding in a foreign country can be a stressful experience, making hiring a wedding planner your safety net on your wedding day. All the planners have a trusted community of vendors they work with, ensuring a stress-free planning process. Also, you will have a person to trust, someone that will work with your best interest in mind and will be there to negotiate for you and make sure all your wedding needs are met – even if you’re planning an elopement or a micro wedding! On the day of the wedding, you’ll need to be the bride and groom – having fun and celebrating each other should be all you have to do!
Book your vendors quickly – and don’t try to save on the most important ones!
Wedding photographer in Greece tip number five (and most important!). That goes for your photographer and your wedding planner. Having them on board from day one of your wedding planning journey will mean that you have secured the people that play the most important part on your wedding day. Because, you might have the most beautiful wedding arch and wedding dress ever, but if you’re lacking a good photographer you won’t get to cherish these memories forever! I can’t stress enough how important good photos are in reminding you how pretty was your wedding day and how much fun you had with your favorite people. Regretting your choice of photographer is the saddest thing it can happen, so investing in someone whose style and aesthetics you trust is a must for me in giving you peace of mind in the years that’ll follow.
Plan not just a wedding day but a wedding weekend
Wedding photographer in Greece tip number six, and most romantic. The key to making your destination wedding an unforgettable experience is giving yourself and your guests something they’ve never seen before. Whisking them away in Greece will be the gift that’ll keep giving in every anniversary, giving your friends and family a lovely way of experiencing Greece, that still is one of the happiest and more welcoming countries in the world. It’s a way to bring meaning and culture to your wedding celebration. If you’re on an island with tradition in wine-making talk with your planner and make this an opportunity for a pre-wedding wine tasting or post-wedding brunch at a vineyard! Also, maybe you and your love take an interest in Greek antiquities, a pre-wedding celebration in a museum of a private sightseeing tour will be something you’d like to share with your guests. The choices are endless in Greece – make the most of your time here!
A destination wedding in Greece sure is the experience of a lifetime and will crown your wedding in the most beautiful light! I would be honored to be your wedding photographer. Feel free to contact me and let’s keep your feelings alive forever!
